Flower-rich habitats for pollinators
Wild flowers and pollinators
Evidence has been amassed identifying substantial declines in pollinating insects, which are vital for the pollination of many food crops. The vast majority of pollinators are wild species, not commercial honeybees. Particularly important groups are the hoverflies and bumblebees. The latter are vital for pollinating early Spring crops, such as fruit trees, as they work at lower temperatures than honey bees. It is also evident that flower-rich habitats in the countryside have also significantly declined, that decline is continuing and there is a clear link between the loss of our native wildflowers, declines in pollinating insects and other farmland wildlife. On a positive note, experience with restoring flower-rich habitats, such as species-rich grasslands, shows that wildlife will respond well.
Flora locale is therefore campaigning for the large-scale and rapid restoration of wildflower-rich habitats, especially in agricultural landscapes, but also in towns, where there are plenty of opportunities to improve the floral diversity of managed green spaces.
