The 700,000m3 peat body is intact and retains the key species for peat growth. Biodiversity benefits will be accompanied by carbon sequestration, improved water quality and quantity.
As part of the project, similar works have been undertaken at Drwsycoed Uchaf, Rhyd Ddu to restore the integrity of 5.3 ha of peatland which drains into Llyn y Gader. This includes the construction of crossing points for livestock, reinstatement of traditional field boundaries for the purposes of controlling grazing densities and the construction of peat dams along shallower drains.
