Course description:
Manor Farm is a 120ha farm of predominantly semi-improved and unimproved grasslands in small hedged enclosures with scattered blocks of ancient woodland and wet woodland on steep ground with alkaline and neutral soils. This field based training day will look at how options under Countryside Stewardship have been used to maintain, restore and create wild grasslands, and we will discuss options under the new Countryside Stewardship Scheme. We will see examples of semi-improved fields that have been restored by over-seeding with brush harvested seed at intervals since 1997, and how, after 8-10 years, the restored examples have become equal to comparable examples of unimproved grassland. And we will discuss the science behind the methods, changes following CAP reform, and how this fits in with running a commercial farm.
