Course description:
Shepherd Meadows is a 34 hectare site located in Sandhurst, Berkshire, much of which is designated a SSSI for its unimproved grassland and ancient woodland interest. It is managed by Bracknell Forest Council under an HLS scheme (now Countryside Stewardship) through a combination of extensive grazing by cattle and mowing hay. The day will include a discussion of managing grassland for its wildlife interest in general as well as the different methods employed at Shepherd Meadows. We will also explore strategic and practical grassland management as well as site specific issues such as changes in hydrology and the challenges of conservation management of valuable wildlife sites with high levels of public access.
