Project description

The field is a 7 ha hilltop site that was chalk grassland until the 1960s and arable for the last 50 years. As part of a HLS agreement it will be converted to chalk grassland using seed and transplants from adjacent areas of species rich grassland.

Green hay strewing and scattering of gathered seed has established a discrete area of sward containing many characteristic calcareous grassland species, e.g., kidney vetch, wild carrot, wild basil and yellow rattle. This will be expanded to most of the rest of the site.

By cutting and clearing, and grazing the aim is to produce a sward that extend the areas of calcareous grass of Portsdown. The soil phosphate levels are low so the prospect of achieving the desired outcome is good.

There is also an arable plant interest.
