Project description

Between 2003 and 2004 nearly 1,000 people from across South Lanarkshire helped to create 18 wild flower meadows.

The aim of these “Biodiversity Banks” is to:

  • create new, and maintain existing, wildlife habitats
  • involve local communities in the planting and care of wildflower areas
  • brighten up urban greenspace
  • encourage the local authority to adopt a new approach to the management of urban greenspace
  • teach new skills to adults and children
  • establish a seedbank for future generations

A single supplier was able to provide seed of Scottish origin (east coast). Plug plant suppliers sourced their seed from the same dealer. The project aims to develop its own local supply of seed.
