Project descriptionThe Lydden Hill Seed Harvesting Project (2005-09) aimed to increase the extent of species rich chalk downland within the Lydden area of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, demonstrating the importance of Roadside Nature Reserves in supporting and linking wildlife rich habitats. The project involved the manual cutting and spreading of flower rich hay from Lydden Hill Roadside Nature Reserve onto nearby Countryside Stewardship arable field margins as a means to create new flower-rich grassland in keeping with the locality. The initiative was supported via Countryside and Environmental Stewardship Schemes (Defra/English Nature/Natural England).
