Project description

Over 3 years a new bridge and by-pass have been constructed around the town of Toomebridge. Prior to the extensive construction work we collected wildflower seed from ASSI's in the area using our brush harvester. We used this to grow plugs in our nursery and also as a seed source for re-sowing the new road verges and banks. The habitats are now being restored using these plugs and also the seed collected. This is the first such scheme in N Ireland where local provenance material was used in creating a wildlife corridor after a major civil engineering scheme.
Additionally, native trees were used for the lanscaping. The Seeds of Time and Place Group met with a representative of Roads Service to put the case for using local provenance trees instead of probably the cheapest option, which would have involved trees whose origins were unknown. The local trees won the day and a tender was issued for the supply of the trees.
