Golden Rules, before you start a habitat creation project

Flora locale
  • Think hard about whether you actually need to introduce plants or seed - it might be possible to manage the existing vegetation to get the right result.
  • If you need to plant, select species that are characteristic to the locality and the type of habitat you are creating or restoring.
  • Use plants or seed of British native origin (Irish if in Ireland/N Ireland); for guidance on areas of search for planting stock see Flora locale's guidelines
  • If you don't have a sound knowledge of local botany and ecological management, find someone to help you who does!
  • Make sure you have the capability and resources to manage the land appropriately after planting or sowing - the majority of project failures are because of inadequate after-care.
