Project description

The re-creation of heathland on former kaolin mining sites (mainly waste tips) has been one of the biggest post-mining restoration programme of its kind in Europe. It has re-created 750ha of lowland heathland.

All seed was collected by Imerys Minerals landscape staff from extant local heathland sites within the Killas and Granites Natural Area. Hardy cattle from local farms now graze the sites. so that the living landscape can be re-integrated into the local faming economy.

Also see the China clay woodland project on the Natural England website.
