Project description

The project objectives are to regenerate Sherwood Forest heathland and plant new Oak and Black Poplar trees. Heather brash is harvested by the Sherwood Forest Trust from lowland heathland sites within Sherwood. The seed is collected and distributed for heathland re-creation projects.
Volunteers collect acorns from the ancient tree sources, usually in Birklands National Nature Reserve to raise Oak trees. Black Poplar seeds are collected from verified sources from local landowners. Seeds are grown on by various sources including Nottinghamshire County Councils nursery providing "Bridge to Work" training for people with learning difficulties. A new local origin tree nursery has been set up by the Sherwood Forest Habitats Forum.
