Project descriptionThis project aimed to enhance the strategically important reedbed network in the Lee Valley by creating and restoring areas at Rye Meads. This will encourage over-wintering birds, with the aim of two wintering and a booming Bittern by 2010. Clumps of Reed (Phragmites australis), which are known to have a stronghold in Lee Marsh, were dug up and replanted in the project area. This new reedbed was netted initially to prevent grazing, and a programme of fish introduction started with Rudd to encourage the over-wintering birds. The netting was removed when the reedbed became established.
