Project description

The aim of the project was to enhance the ground flora and canopy of Prestwich Clough, an urban ancient woodland site that runs along a stream valley. It lost much of its natural flora through overgrown tree canopy, formal landscaping and invasion by Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed.
The invasive species were cleared by volunteers from the Friends group and BTCV. Using historical records of flora found in the Clough over the last 100 years, appropriate wildflower seeds and tree/shrub cuttings were collected from ancient woodlands in Bury. 20,000 wildflowers and 2,000 native trees were planted. Care was taken to avoid contamination of bluebells from neighbouring properties.
